Build your critical care foundation through integrated ICU and anaesthetics experience in a leading academic hospital.

Are you a motivated PGY3 doctor with a passion for acute and critical care medicine? Macquarie University Health is seeking a Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) to join our newly established Critical Care Training Pathway at Macquarie University Hospital, commencing February 2027 on a full-time, fixed-term basis.

This innovative 12-month training position offers integrated experience across Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics, with approximately equal time spent in each specialty throughout the year. Unlike traditional rotational Critical Care SRMO positions, this program distributes ICU and Anaesthetic experience across the full year, enabling progressive skill development, continuity of supervision and ongoing engagement with both specialties.

Ideally suited to doctors considering future training in Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), Anaesthetics (ANZCA), Emergency Medicine, Perioperative Medicine or other acute care specialties, this role provides strong preparation for future ANZCA and CICM training pathways within a supportive, high-supervision academic environment.

About the Role

In addition to theatre and ICU experience, you will gain exposure to the Acute Pain Service, Pre-Admission Assessment Clinic, perioperative medicine and the management of deteriorating inpatients.

The successful applicant will spend approximately:

• 50% of their time in Intensive Care Medicine.
  
• 50% of their time in Anaesthetics, Acute Pain and Pre-Admission Assessment.
  
• Fortnightly ward-based shifts supporting inpatient care.
  
• Limited after-hours commitments outside rostered critical care duties.

As part of this program, you will:

• Work alongside experienced intensivists, anaesthetists, fellows, registrars, CMOs and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  
• Gain supervised exposure to anaesthetic practice, including airway management, perioperative assessment and procedural skills.
  
• Develop expertise in the assessment and management of critically ill patients in a modern ICU environment.
  
• Participate in the management of acutely deteriorating patients as a member of the hospital's Code Blue team.
  
• Contribute to Acute Pain and Pre-Admission Assessment services.
  
• Receive regular teaching, bedside supervision and career mentoring from senior clinicians.
  
• Participate in simulation, educational activities and multidisciplinary training programs.
  
• Collaborate with clinicians and academics across Macquarie University Health in research and quality improvement projects.
  
• Contribute to the teaching of medical students and other Doctors in Training.

About You

You are an enthusiastic and motivated doctor with a strong interest in critical care medicine and a genuine commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care. You bring excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach to multidisciplinary care, and a desire to continually develop your clinical and procedural expertise.

Selection Criteria

• General Registration with AHPRA as a medical practitioner (or eligibility for General Registration by commencement) and an MBBS or equivalent medical qualification recognised in Australia.
  
• Successful completion of Internship and at least one additional postgraduate year of clinical experience.
  
• Some previous experience in critical care, emergency medicine, anaesthetics, acute medicine or a related field.
  
• Demonstrated competency in core procedural skills, including venepuncture and intravenous cannulation.
  
• Demonstrated understanding of patient-centred care and effective communication with patients and carers.
  
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills, with a commitment to multidisciplinary clinical care.
  
• Interest in teaching, supervision, research or quality improvement activities.

Desirable Requirements

• Completion of ALS2 (or equivalent) certification; applicants who do not currently hold ALS2 certification should be willing to undertake training during employment.
  
• Previous ICU, anaesthetic, emergency or other acute care experience.
  
• Participation in research, audit, teaching or quality improvement initiatives.

Role-Specific Conditions

• Hold active AHPRA General Registration (or be eligible for activation prior to commencement) and provide evidence of AHPRA registration during the application process.
  
• Hold or obtain a valid NSW Working With Children Check.
  
• Satisfy National Criminal Record Check requirements.
  
• Meet Macquarie University Health immunisation and vaccination requirements.
